WELDED STEEL PIPE VS SEAMLESS STEEL PIPE PRODUCTS AND SIGNIFICANT PROCESSES
November 26, 2017Carbon steel, also called plain carbon steel, is a metal alloy, a combination of two elements, iron and carbon, where other elements are present in quantities too small to affect the properties. The only other alloying elements allowed in plain-carbon steel are manganese (1.65% max), silicon (0.60% max), and copper (0.60% max). Steel with a low carbon content has the same properties as iron, soft but easily formed. As carbon content rises the metal becomes harder and stronger but less ductile and more difficult to weld. Higher carbon content lowers steel’s melting point and its temperature resistance in general.
ASTM A513 Type 1 tube is produced from low carbon steel. Typically available in hot rolled black, hot rolled, P&O. Tubing with walls heavier than 18ga are produced from hot rolled steel. A513 Type 1 is produced to closer dimensional tolerances than A500 and chemistries that allow for bending.
ASTM A513 Carbon Steel Tube, in the as welded condition and furnished in 1008 to 1015 steel, it is the lowest cost mechanical tubing available. Wall thickness 18 gauge and lighter are produced from cold rolled steel. Heavier than 18 gauge is typically produced from hot rolled steel. Welding is usually done as ERW, Electric Resistance Weld. Typically available in hot rolled black or hot rolled P&O (Pickeled and Oiled).
